Motorcycle Safety Month
Motorcycle Safety Month falls in May each year as a reminder and lesson to always drive safely and smartly around motorcyclists. Due to their small size, motorcycles are easy to overlook while on the road.
As the weather warms up, expect to see more riders on the roads. To promote and better ensure their safety and yours, the State of Michigan provided tips on how to share the road with motorcyclists.
- Always keep a watchful eye: look twice at intersections before you turn or pull out.
- Don’t just rely on your ears: Practice always remaining alert.
- Keep your distance: When following a motorcyclist.
- Know where your blind spots are and double-check them often: Pay special attention to the A-pillar blind spot.
- Be cautious at intersections: Make sure to look twice before turning, especially left.
- Know their signals:
- A right turn: signaled by a left arm raised
- A left turn: signaled by the left arm straight out to the side
- A stop: signaled by the left arm downward.
- Be aware: Most motorcycle-vehicle crashes happen on streets.
- Avoid distractions: Wait until you reach your destination to interact with a mobile device, eat or drink.
